Art Expo at Digital Harbor High: It’s Not All Technology

Picture with MayorDigital Harbor High’s known commitment to a computer technology curriculum masks the fact that this school provides a well-rounded program for college preparation, and as the school matures there is a concerted effort to broaden the choices. And what the school may lack in quantity they make up for in quality. The Music Department (Alyson Covino) and the Art Department (Todd Conway) are combining forces to show off their students’ talents on the evening of May 7. Also on display will be the robot built this year by Digital High students and entered into a regional competition in Annapolis in February.

You will also be able to view short videos produced by media students as part of a competition for best short feature. There will be art items for sale in a silent auction, and music not only by students but some visiting professionals. It should be a pleasant way to spend an evening, getting to know the school a little better while being entertained, and we believe you will be surprised by the quality of everything on display and for sale. One way to know that this is serious art is to know a bit more about the art teacher, Todd Conway. He is a nationally-recognized seasoned professional artist. His work appears in advertising and promotional materials distributed throughout the US. Locally his efforts are most obvious to us on the mirrored façade of the AVAM. Todd directed Digital Harbor High students in the creation of about50 of the big squares that were placed on the AVAM’s exterior. Todd has toyed with the idea of quitting his teaching job to work full time commercially, but he says he just couldn’t do it. “I am a better teacher because I am an artist, and a better artist because I am a teacher.” Todd has a studio in Canton, and you can find out more about him by going to www.toddconwayarts.com.
